Tourism’s proactive role in water management not only supports sustainability but also strengthens its own future.

“Water” is a great place to start when it comes to serious sustainability efforts. Why? Because water is essential for life, and we all understand that. It connects directly with every other area of sustainability—from health to energy, from ecosystems to the economy. Without clean and sufficient water, none of these areas can thrive.

The new Copernicus ECMWF report on the speed of global heating released today, shows just how urgent the climate crisis has become, making action more necessary than ever. By focusing on water (SDG 6) and oceans (SDG 14), we can take practical, impactful first steps that lay the foundation for a sustainable future. If we can secure and protect our water, we make it easier to achieve all the other sustainability goals.

Water is both universal and urgent, making it a natural first step for everyone and every industry.

Let us take Tourism as an example:
Tourism is a major industry in many water-scarce countries, meaning it has a huge stake in how we use and protect water. As people travel, they place more demand on local water resources, making it essential for tourism leaders to act and set examples.
By embracing water and ocean sustainability, tourism can become a global thought leader, inspiring visitors and communities alike. Tourism must become a global advocate for water, showing to visitors what water means to the country/region/city or hotel. It must openly communicate about the challenges and the solutions and the outcomes of impact investments done.
For all those who are not used to think in narratives: stories about water are interesting, exciting, magic, helpful, raising awareness.

Lets make the tourism industry water sustainable and #ShareYouCare! (share how and that you care)
For tourism-dependent nations, leading the way in water efficiency doesn’t just help preserve their natural beauty—it builds resilience against water shortages and climate impacts. This leadership can set a powerful example, showing other industries how sustainable water management supports both people and the planet. If tourism prioritizes water, it can pave the way for serious, lasting sustainability efforts worldwide.”
